Children in 2006 consumed more snack calories per day than in 1977, with snacks accounting for 27.3% of average daily caloric intake. The study says children consume about 2,099 calories a day, 100 more than in 1977, but mealtime calorie intake is declining.
Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., is promoting a school lunch program in his state as a model for efforts to improve eating habits in children nationwide. Hinchey says the program in Binghamton, N.Y., which was awarded a Gold Level designation for its schools from the USDA this year, is improving health and education by offering students nutritious, locally produced foods.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston have revealed a set of factors they say are helpful in predicting which dialysis patients are more likely to suffer from vitamin D deficiency. Data from more than 900 patients found predictors of vitamin D deficiency to be race, sex and blood albumin levels and the winter season.
