Reports released Thursday indicate the economy is improving, if slowly. "The data is consistent with our expectations of 'half-speed' economic recovery," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group. Unemployment claims dropped 6,000, according to the Labor Department. Meanwhile, the Commerce Department said the trade gap defied analyst expectations by shrinking to $37.3 billion.
