The Department of Homeland Security is considering whether to expand its so-called "Einstein technology" -- which is designed to monitor federal online networks to prevent cyberattacks -- to the private sector. "I don't think you have to be Big Brother in order to provide a level of protection either for federal government systems or otherwise," said Greg Schaffer, the assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications at the DHS. "As a practical matter, you're looking at data that's relevant to malicious activity, and that's the data that you're focused on."
