Recent reports indicate the Federal Reserve might gain additional power as the primary regulator of major financial institutions. If so, officials are concerned with what is expected to be a significant increase in pressure on the central bank from the financial-services industry. They said that while the industry has become comfortable with interest-rate changes and other monetary-policy decisions, it is not prepared for the central bank to control lending volume.
