A federal judge has accepted an agreement that would end a 26-year-old lawsuit and special-education oversight in Baltimore. If the schools meet a series of criteria, oversight could end in July, and a final settlement in the case could be effected by September 2012. The agreement begins the closure of a lawsuit filed in 1984 by the Maryland Disability Law Center on behalf of a group of special-education students. In the past few years, the city's students in special education have posted large test score gains.
