While city sewers are not usually a tourist attraction, Portland, Ore., draws visitors to its eco-friendly sewer system. The city encourages residents to disconnect gutters from the storm-water system and install rain barrels to collect water instead. Portland has also installed rain gardens on 300 roofs and built curb extensions with plants or trees to replace storm-water drains.
