Budget cuts in Illinois are forcing school districts to scale back or restructure programs for gifted students. The cuts are expected to lead to an increase in class sizes and less targeted instruction. Schools say they will cluster gifted students together in classes and give them in-class opportunities for special projects, but some worry students won't be challenged. "If they're not getting what they need, if they're not maxing out their potential, really we're just losing them," one gifted educator said.
