A program for teaching English to non-native speakers in Columbia, Mo., schools includes some 630 students who speak 43 different languages, and the program's growth shows no indication of slowing. The district employs educators who can translate between English and 25 other languages and who focus on cultivating English literacy among students. "As long as we have international students coming into Columbia's public schools, it is our responsibility to provide them with the best education possible," one teacher said.
