In the study, the gold nanocages injected into mice accumulate and, once heated up with laser light, eliminate tumors without harming surrounding tissue. PET scans showed that mice injected with the nanocages had fainter tumors compared with buffer-injected mice, suggesting that most of the tumor cells were no longer working.
