Researchers have discovered that a protein signaling pathway called Robo4 can protect blood vessels from damage caused by viral and bacterial infections. Activating the signaling pathway reduced mortality by as must as 50% in bird flu and sepsis mouse models, the study showed. The finding could lead to new treatments for viral and bacterial infections, including pandemic flu and sepsis, as well as biological agents, the researchers said.
