Educators and experts say it may be time to move away from assigned reading and give students more choice over the books they read -- increasing the chance they will enjoy them. Tina Gordon, president of the Canadian Council of Teachers of English and a resource teacher, said parents and teachers believe that "what makes a more educated person is if they can quote Hamlet," leading teachers to continue assigning class novels. However, researchers have found a link between reading for pleasure and increased student achievement.
