A powerful storm that rolled into the Northeast over the weekend continued to batter the region on Monday, dumping heavy rain on New England states. Thousands of residents lost electricity while fatalities from storm-related incidents climbed to nine. Many roadways and schools were ordered closed because of severe flooding, prompting the governors of Massachusetts and two nearby states to declare states of emergency.
