Researchers said the H1N1 flu virus may be closely linked to the pandemic flu virus that appeared in 1918. In one of two studies, researchers said that they were able to immunize mice infected with H1N1 flu using hemagglutinin, a vaccine derived from the 1918 flu virus, and that the reverse also worked. "It gives us a new understanding of how pandemic viruses evolve into seasonal strains, and, importantly, provides direction for developing vaccines to slow or prevent that transformation," one of the researchers said.
