With economies in places such as China and India expected to give rise to a new wave of travel, major U.S.-based hotel chains are positioning themselves to seize the opportunity. Starwood Hotels & Resorts is set to open 34 to 40 hotels in the Asia-Pacific region this year, while Hilton is planning new properties in Japan and China, and Marriott is pushing ahead with about 20 hotels in India and five in China.
