Verizon Wireless' LTE field trials have yielded much faster data speeds than anticipated, the carrier said Monday, adding that its 4G tests are going so well that it will expand its initial deployment beyond the Boston and Seattle test sites. Average download rates have ranged from 5 megabits per second to 12 Mbps, with uploads rated at 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps -- similar to a typical home broadband link, the telecom said. By year-end, Verizon Wireless plans to begin serving 25 to 30 markets that total 100 million people.
