With only about 3% of owners in the U.S. carrying pet insurance, most veterinary clients demand an explanation for each diagnostic test recommended for their pets before agreeing to them, writes Dr. Karen Oberthaler, a New York-based veterinary oncologist. Oberthaler says she ranks diagnostic tests based on level of importance, potential risks and approximate costs to help avoid costly or unnecessary tests.
