Higher wages and performance-related pay aren't always the key to employee performance or organizational success, writes Alan Murray. While sales staff thrive when given commission-based pay boosts, few other corporate workers can be rewarded so directly on their own personal achievements. "Today's jobs generally involve team work," Murray notes. "In these situations, pay for performance can often seem unfair and arbitrary, and the result can demotivate, rather than motivate, employees."
