Employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as 401(k)s, are a simple and convenient way to save for retirement, but an Employee Benefit Research Institute analysis of Census Bureau data found that in 2008 only 51% of Americans had access to such a plan. Other research has found that not having access to an employer-sponsored plan impedes retirement savings -- while 61% of workers with 401(k)s say they have a plan for retirement, only 40% of those without say the same.
