Ajay Banga will take over the reins at MasterCard on July 1, succeeding Robert W. Selander, who will continue as a member of the company's board of directors and an executive vice chairman. Banga came to MasterCard 10 months ago from Citigroup. Analysts say that Banga's promotion is coming at a key time. "Banga is coming in at a critical time, as he must balance meeting Street expectations with investments for growth in new geographies," according to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Frisch. "His reputation as a very smart operator with a willingness to be a change agent could make MasterCard a very interesting story over the next few years."
