Starbucks is raising the prices it charges supermarkets for packaged coffee by as much as 12% on both the namesake and Seattle's Best brands, the first increase since 2008, and raised the suggested retail price on 12-ounce packages by $1. The move comes as the coffee giant seeks to cope with ever-higher commodity coffee bean prices -- rivals Folgers, Dunkin' Donuts, Sara Lee, Kraft and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters have all instituted similar price increases.
Howard Schultz, chief executive officer of Starbucks, said the company is planning "aggressive" growth in Japan, and also spoke of expansion in China, India and Vietnam. He delivered the remarks from Tokyo, where he is promoting the Japanese launch of the company's instant coffee, Via.
Starbucks master coffee blender Andrew Linnemann says that coffees can be paired with certain dishes to contrast with or bring out their flavor, just as wine can. Linnemann recently teamed up with award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson for a 10-city tour of coffee and food pairing and cooking demonstrations.
