A Chinese government program's funding of a middle school language class is generating opposition from some in a southern California community. The move pits predominantly white, older opponents of the Confucius Classroom grant against the school board, which has a majority of members who are ethnic Chinese. The student body, however, is mostly Hispanic. One expert says the controversy will likely become more frequent nationwide as China develops such programs to shape its image abroad.
