Alan Simpson, a former Republican senator who now sits on President Barack Obama's commission looking at ways to bring down the federal debt, responds to questions being raised about his party loyalty in a Newsweek interview. "Look at my record. No one can say I want higher taxes. You're entitled to be called a fool, idiot, bonehead, slob, screwball. But an attack unanswered is an attack believed," he said. Simpson says it is too soon to tell whether the commission will be successful but that the process has worked in addressing other issues in the past.
