Great River Energy is proceeding with a $300 million project in Spiritwood, N.D., to locate a proposed cellulosic ethanol plant with a coal-fired power station that is under construction. The company wants to use lignin from the 20 million-gallon-per-year ethanol facility to help fuel the power station; in turn, it would run the biorefinery with steam from the power station. GRE will conduct studies during the next year, to be followed by preliminary engineering design and financing efforts, said Sandra Broekema, a GRE executive.
