Air traffic controllers at Philadelphia International Airport can now track aircraft using GPS technology known as ADS-B, making the airport a "pioneer site" in the rollout of NextGen, according to the FAA. Philadelphia was chosen as one of four demonstration sites because of the presence of UPS, which has some 100 aircraft equipped with the avionics needed to take advantage of ADS-B. US Airways, the dominant airline at PHL, also is equipping some of its planes, according to the FAA. Philadelphia is considered a key test of the system due to its busy East Coast location.
