A proposed project to remove a 3,500-foot crosswind runway and a 4,000-foot runway to construct one 5,000-foot runway at Fitchburg Municipal Airport in Massachusetts is stirring debate among local leaders and the general aviation community, with the airport commissioner complaining that a power struggle with the mayor could cost the project $15 million in federal and state grants. The City Council will review the grants next week and must sign certain assurances by May 1 to receive the funds. Commissioner Kit Walker said the grants and private donations would fully fund the project and allow more small, private jets to use the airport.
