Students in a gifted-education program at an Indiana school studied the effects on society of historical events and issues as part of a six-week independent study project. Woodbrook Elementary School teacher Jay Vahle came up with the idea for the project and offered his fourth- and fifth-grade students the opportunity to research subjects of their choosing. "They can form some kind of opinion and not be concerned that there is really only one answer," Vahle said.
