A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the use of diagnostic imaging tests for Medicare cancer patients, particularly PET, has significantly increased, with costs for cancer patients also growing at a significant rate. PET scans for every patient increased at an average rate of 36% to 53% per year, the researchers said. The findings suggest that "as newer technologies become available, that's where we are seeing the majority of the increase," the study's lead author said.
