Dr. Juan Lubroth, chief veterinary officer of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, warned that although the fatal H5N1 bird flu has been largely contained, it still poses a serious danger globally and it persists in Indonesia and four other countries. Where factors such as population growth and increased agricultural production are present, "humans will continue to become exposed to a variety of influenza viruses originating in animals," Lubroth said.
