Four horses at the Spirit Horse Stables in Spring Hill, Tenn., died last week of botulism, a disease caused by bacteria in decaying matter. Six horses at the stables also have been infected with the disease and are receiving intensive care at a local equine hospital. The remaining horses at the stables have been vaccinated for the illness to prevent further infection. The cause of the infections has not been determined, but the bacteria may have been in wet hay the horses ate.
