A study that monitored 7,822 female nurses with Type 2 diabetes for 26 years showed that those who consumed the most bran had a 35% lower risk of dying from heart disease and a 28% lower risk of death from all causes compared with those who ate the least bran. One researcher said whole grains, especially those rich in fiber and vitamins like bran, may help lower inflammation and protect the heart.
