All California special-education teachers are required to undergo autism training by July 2011, and for some veteran educators, the courses will be their first training specific to the disorder. New teachers will receive the training as part of their teacher-education programs, but 25,000 active teachers will have to seek out the additional courses to help prepare them for the unique needs of students with autism. "I think it will make a real difference in terms of what they're able to do with these children," a special-education professor said.
