The summer travel forecast is showing signs of modest improvement, with various polls showing an upward trend in travelers compared to last summer. Despite some analysts' focus on airline fees for peak travel days this summer, fares are still on the rebound from last year, when they took a nosedive: according to the Transportation Department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average airfares in the U.S. fell 7.4% in the last three months of 2009. The Air Transport Association estimates airlines will carry an average of 2.2 million passengers per day from June 1 to Aug. 31 -- up 1% from last summer.
