School districts nationwide are cutting summer-school programs that officials say they can no longer afford -- a move criticized by Education Secretary Arne Duncan. "At a time when we need to work harder to close achievement gaps and prepare every child for college and career, cutting summer school is the wrong way to go," he said. "These kids need more time, not less." A survey by the American Association of School Administrators found that 34% of surveyed districts are looking at eliminating summer school programs in the 2010-11 school year.
