The Pompidou Centre, a new branch of France's modern art museum in Metz, opens this week with a roof modeled after a Chinese hat. The roof -- made of wood -- tops a facade of glass shutters on the ground floor that open in warm weather. "I have designed many other smaller buildings to study this kind of roof... but nobody has designed such a big timber roof," said architect Shigeru Ban.
