Many homeowners use weed killers or herbicides for their lawns even when they are not needed, writes Jeff Ball. He explains that fertilizer should never be used on a lawn that has already been sprayed with pesticide because it increases stress on the turf grass. The use of synthetic fertilizers and synthetic pesticides can systematically repel or kill harmless insects such as earthworms and beneficial microbes, Ball notes.
