Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley says his carrier "stands alone in terms of our 2008 and 2009 profitability" despite the recession. Aggressive expansion on mainland routes helped win new customers, and Hawaiian is now competing for hotly contested slots at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. But Dunkerley insists the airline has not lost sight of its "bring-folks-to-Hawaii" niche. "We work very hard to make selling Hawaii our unique opportunity," he says. "There's a lot more opportunity to explore ... before we start running out of that space."
