A recent comparison of achievement at a New York City charter school versus a nearby traditional public school fails to consider the makeup of the student population at those schools, education blogger Valerie Strauss writes in this post. Strauss cites data that show the traditional school serves more students who are poor or who are severely disabled and taught in self-contained classrooms -- making, she argues, a comparison of achievement at the two schools meaningless.
