Corporate researchers from companies such as IBM, Microsoft and Yahoo! are working to find ways to use technology to automatically detect people's social ties. The researchers hope to use e-mail data and other communications tools to map users' social networks, in the hope of creating smart privacy and message-priority settings. Still, as the uproar surrounding Google's Buzz showed, there are plenty of risks associated with putting social networks on autopilot, experts note.
