A report in Pediatrics said the odds of needing mechanical ventilation don't decrease when very premature infants who are breathing spontaneously in the delivery room get surfactant treatment in the first 30 minutes of life. Researchers concluded that nCPAP should be started soon after birth in spontaneously breathing premature infants and that early selective surfactant should be given upon signs of respiratory distress.
