A veterinarian in Abilene, Texas, has warned of a possible spike in heartworm cases in dogs next year because of the unusually heavy rains and snow in the area in recent months. "It takes five to seven months from the time the animal is bitten by an infected mosquito to see any results. Mosquitoes are bad right now, so we're working to prevent next year's heartworm," the vet said.
