The world will continue to rely on fossil fuels until at least 2050 despite the trend toward alternative energy sources, Shell CEO Peter Voser said. His statement comes as BP continues to address an oil spill from one of its platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, which has U.S. officials re-evaluating future drilling plans. Fossil fuels will continue to be important over the years "in order to actually allow renewables and other energy sources the time to technically develop, commercialize and build market share," Voser said.
