Amtrak officials are urging the Federal Railroad Administration to make it clear that the nation's premier passenger rail service has laid the groundwork for the future of intercity high-speed rail and expanded conventional service. In a letter to the FRA, Amtrak noted, "[Our] existing national intercity passenger rail system should be recognized in the NRP [National Rail Plan] as the foundation for the development of an expanded network of high speed and conventional rail services spanning key corridors across the United States."
