Research at the University of Rhode Island's Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Science aims to develop larger and more efficiently growing rainbow trout through genetic engineering. Researchers so far have inoculated 20,000 fish eggs with a gene variant that suppresses a muscle-growth-restricting protein to produce rainbow trout with roughly 20% more muscle mass than the standard fish.
