Energy company BP succeeded in placing a cap to stop leakage from an undersea oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, but the federal government has yet to confirm the method's success, said National Incident Commander Adm. Thad Allen. "It will be sometime before we can confirm that this method will work and to what extent it will mitigate the release of oil into the environment," Allen said. BP's attempt to contain the spill is "only a temporary and partial fix," he added.
