The New York Power Authority and Metropolitan Transportation Authority have unveiled solar panels at the Coney Island subway station to help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The panels, placed on the roof of a NYC Transit maintenance barn, heat water used to clean sections of the subway trains' stainless steel exteriors. The technology provides an estimated annual savings of $5.7 million and reduces greenhouse-gas emissions by more than 34,000 tons.
