The HHS Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability on Friday voted to retain the current lifetime blood-donation ban on men who have sex with men, citing the need for more research in order to change the policy. The recommendations made by the panel will be discussed further by another panel headed by Dr. Howard Koh, the assistant secretary of health for the HHS. Recommendations drawn up by this panel will be subjected to the FDA regulatory process and it would be up to the FDA to issue blood safety guidelines, said Jerry Holmberg, executive secretary for the panel.
