With more and more genetic tendencies -- such as Lynch syndrome, which greatly increases the risk of developing colon cancer -- being identified by researchers, many patients are using genetic testing to identify which diseases they are at a higher risk for. Speaking to the goal of developing personalized medicine treatments, University of California, San Diego's Institute of Genomic Medicine Dr. Albert La Spada said: "Right now it is like a jigsaw puzzle where we only have a handful of pieces. But as more genetic information becomes available, we can update, expand and see what matches up in a patient's genetic story."
