Although the main runway is on schedule for partial reopening in July, the temporary "metering scheme", in place since construction began, has been so successful in reducing delays at New York JFK that it will likely be extended there -- and may eventually find its way to other airports. Under the plan, flights departing at peak hours may wait at the gate until just before takeoff, rather than sitting in long lines on the tarmac. The system may help airlines avoid lengthy tarmac delays, though the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it requires extra staffing by the airport.
