Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., proposed several ideas to continue offshore production without implementing a six-month deepwater-drilling ban. Her recommendations include permitting companies to resume "drilling through dirt" and close monitoring of drilling, casing and completion procedures. "I believe that we can demonstrably improve the safety of deepwater drilling without shutting down the Gulf Coast economy for more than six months," she said.
