The Mahindra & Mahindra group is betting that it can corner the subcontinent's electric-vehicle market by tapping India's talent for frugal engineering. Instead of costly assembly-line conveyor belts, M&M's vehicles are wheeled from one workstation to the next on their own hubs; they're also made from a polymer, eliminating the need for expensive metalworking tools and paint shops.
